The environment that Randall has lived in and the landscapes that he travels to have always been the content of his paintings. Needing personal contact with a place in order to have the sensory information needed to create something convincing, his paintings always begin with an experience whether it's a walk to the local park or a destination trail. From there, Randall relies on memory to manipulate the paint once he is back in the studio. Though he is dedicated to interpreting the natural world, he does so as a secondary concern as he responds to the painting process taking place before him.
