Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Korey Gulbrandson is a self-taught artist that combines painting with sculpture to create something that is truly unique. First being recognized for his artistic talents when awarded a seven-foot toy stuffed stocking from a local drawing contest, he later discovered a small collection of oil paints that led him to where he is today.
Each piece begins with a hand-crafted wood canvas that evolves into layers upon layers of manipulated wax and acrylic or oil paint. Using a torch and various carving tools, Gulbrandson scribes and removes layers to create a diverse and often times unexpected surface of texture and color. With this process, he is constantly working to emphasize contrasting elements, such as space and form. Continually being informed by each of his paintings as he is creating, the result is a signature and self-taught style that is absolutely striking upon viewing.
