Lost and Found

Bobbie Jansen, paintings and Nelson Davis, sculpture

“Lost and Found” is our second exhibit in the new space. The title though cryptic, references the objects that Bobbie Jansen uses to compose her stillife paintings and Nelson Davis relies on found objects to discover ideas for his sculpture. And in a sense, the gallery was lost for seven months and has been found by many loyal fans and patrons.

Bobbie Jansen’s studio is the upper level of a barn filled with light beaming on an array of collected objects and furniture. “It is often in the process of painting an object that I discover what my connection to it is. It may be as simple as the shape or color, but more often it is a symbolic stand-in for something greater. A painting’s success is not as much related to a particular reading of the objects, but more for its capacity to transcend them.”

Though the art “speaks for itself” and can be variously interpreted, if you want to know the real story, Nelson Davis is happy to share his inspiration. His process is unique – while sorting through a mountain of collected treasures, an idea will emerge. He combines several pieces and begins carving connecting parts from his other mountain of scrap wood. The sculpture that emerges depicts a vision or memory of some life experience.
